Chauncy Bell Stewart Emery The question of "what is real?" has bothered philosophers and mystics since the dawn of history, but most of us are too busy to give it much thought. It is not as if the answer would change our lives much one way or the other. Atoms go on being atoms whether we know they are there or not. No doubt it is obvious that much of what we value is socially constructed - families, institutions, products, brands, services, teams, even football games and beer become they are in social constructions. Every software bug, every design error, and every manufacturing fault can be traced back to roots in conversations that people did or did not have. But how does this happen, and how can we take advantage of the insight that we are busy constructing realities? How, really, do we construct "realities"? Are we doing it the best way we can? Are our organizations created mindfully, or are they in some way created by default? Chauncey Bell, Stewart Emery, and Don Steiny invite you to an exploration about the socially constructed world and how we might do a better job of it. Chauncey has worked on this issue for years, helping clients build new business models, service innovations, institutions, and ways of doing business, and in his role as a founder of The Design Community; Stewart Emery has worked globally with many thousands of people on how they construct their personal realities and influence, for better or worse, the organizations in which they work and play; and Don Steiny is a analyst and influencer of social networks, a scientific way of talking about socially constructed reality. Each combines academic research with practical experience and vast worldwide networks. Come and explore how an emerging set of interpretations about how people and institutions change themselves can support you and your organization as you strive to prepare for the future that is coming to you.
